Red Dog in Alaska is one of the most important zinc mining operations associated with potential germanium recovery in the United States. The deposit is a large sedimentary exhalative, or SEDEX, zinc-lead-silver system and demonstrates the strong relationship between major zinc deposits and the global germanium supply chain.
Germanium is commonly recovered as a by-product from zinc-bearing ores, particularly where germanium is concentrated in sulfide minerals such as sphalerite.
Germanium Potential at Red Dog
A recent assessment of active and potential germanium sources identified Red Dog as a significant sulfide-hosted germanium source, listing approximately 1,200 tonnes of germanium resources at an estimated grade of 15 ppm Ge.
Although its germanium grade is lower than exceptional high-grade deposits such as Lincang, the enormous scale of the underlying zinc resource makes Red Dog strategically important.
