Kipushi Mine: A World-Class Zinc-Copper-Germanium Deposit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Kipushi deposit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the world’s best-known germanium-bearing mineral deposits. It is a large polymetallic system containing zinc, copper, lead and other metals, with historically significant germanium concentrations.

USGS data identifies Kipushi as one of the largest historical producers associated with the rare Kipushi-type deposit classification. The deposit has been reported to host approximately 60 million tonnes of material containing 100 to 200 ppm germanium in historical resource information.

A High-Grade Germanium-Bearing Deposit

Germanium at Kipushi is associated with sulfide mineralization and the complex zinc-lead-copper replacement system. Kipushi-type deposits are considered particularly important because they can contain some of the highest germanium concentrations found in major base-metal ore systems.

Germanium commonly occurs in sulfide minerals and can be recovered as a by-product during the processing of zinc-bearing materials.

Kipushi demonstrates why zinc and polymetallic deposits are important to the global germanium industry. Most primary germanium production is linked to the processing of other mineral commodities rather than dedicated germanium mines.
