Lincang Germanium Deposit: One of the World’s Largest Germanium Resources

Located in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, the Lincang deposit is widely recognized as one of the world’s largest and most significant germanium deposits. Unlike many germanium resources that occur as a by-product of zinc mining, Lincang is notable for its germanium-rich coal seams.

Scientific studies have estimated that the deposit contains at least 1,000 tonnes of germanium, with an average grade of approximately 850 ppm Ge. This combination of large contained germanium and exceptionally high grades makes Lincang one of the most important known germanium occurrences globally.

Germanium Hosted in Coal Seams

The Lincang deposit occurs within coal seams of the Miocene-age Bangmai Formation. Geological research indicates that the germanium enrichment is closely associated with the underlying Ge-rich granite and specific conditions during the formation of the coal-bearing sequence.

Only certain coal seams contain significant germanium concentrations. This unusual geological setting demonstrates the importance of coal and lignite deposits as potential sources of germanium, in addition to the more common zinc and lead-zinc sulfide deposits.

Why Lincang Is Important

Lincang is particularly important because of its:

  • Estimated germanium content of at least 1,000 tonnes
  • Average reported grade of approximately 850 ppm Ge
  • Coal-hosted mineralization
  • Location in China, the world’s leading germanium-producing country
  • Strategic importance to the global germanium supply chain

Germanium is used in fiber optics, infrared systems, semiconductors and solar technologies. As demand for advanced technologies grows, major high-grade deposits such as Lincang remain important strategic mineral resources.

The Lincang deposit highlights China’s geological advantage in germanium resources and remains one of the key deposits to monitor when researching the world’s major germanium deposits.
